Two recent map articles of interest in non-map sources

"Paradise misplaced. Modern man knows where he stands. His map tells
him." [unsigned article in The Economist, Vol. 353, No. 8151,
December 31st, 1999, p. 45. Watch out, this Millennium special edition
has two sets of page numbering.]

This issue of The Economist is amazing, and the entire issue is a
great read. The "illuminated manuscript" cover is a hoot, with its
female scribe facing down her p.c. and furry mouse. I was pleased to
see mapmaking recognized as a millennial moment.

"Jean-Nicolas Desandrouins and His overlooked map of 18th-Century
Williamsburg. A closer look at a seemingly familiar drawing of the
city in 1781 turns up heretofore unnoticed details," by Martha W.
McCartney. Colonial Williamsburg, Vol. XXI, No. 6, December
     1999/January 2000, p. 45-48.

     Enjoy!
