for the Earth Sciences Librarian and Bibliographer. This is an Academic
Staff appointment, rather than a faculty-tenured position. Applicants

The Libraries seek a subject specialist with training in an Earth
Sciences discipline to develop and manage collections supporting those
academic areas. The scope of the Librarian's collecting responsibilities
for Earth Sciences materials is comprehensive, with a focus on recently
published materials and data in all formats and media. The Librarian
should bring to the selection process an understanding of current forms
of research and their use of the wide variety of sources of information.

The Librarian is also responsible for providing reference and
bibliographic assistance to faculty and students of Earth Sciences, as
well as to scholars in related departments and programs. In addition,
the Librarian should have demonstrated communication and interpersonal
skills that enable contributions to the programs and projects of the
Libraries, Academic Information Resources, and to the University at large.

The Librarian is a member of the Science and Engineering Resource Group
(SERG) and participates actively in the Group's programs. SERG’s focus
is to remake the traditional science libraries into more responsive,
dynamic, and flexible information centers. This is being carried out
through a series of initiatives in which the Earth Sciences Librarian
will be an integral part. Innovative ideas and an ability to adapt to
and create change are highly valued skills for the person in this
position. In short, the Librarian for Earth Sciences will be an
energetic and flexible colleague who is looking towards the future and
wants to be an integral part of creating a new model of digital
librarianship.

Specific Responsibilities:

1. Plans, develops, and manages research collections in the earth
sciences. Selects current and retrospective materials in all formats.
Maintains close contact with faculty and students in the School of Earth
Sciences to insure that library collections support current research and
teaching programs. Is responsible for identifying resources for the
Libraries’ internal development of digital resources, for identifying
externally produced digital resources and data that should be collected
and archived locally, and for working with appropriate staff to develop
the infrastructure for delivering these digital resources.
2. Creates and actively manages the Branner Web space, which is moving
to a Drupal platform starting in the fall. Manages the library blog,
works with the faculty and Branner staff to integrate materials into
SU’s course management system. Seeks out new applications and software
to keep the library up-to-date on Web 2.0 technologies and their use in
an information setting.

3. Provides reference, research assistance, and bibliographic
instruction in the fields of Earth Sciences. Prepares interpretive
materials that enhance access to the collections, including resource
homepages for the Libraries’ web site. Trains staff at the Branner
Library in the use of reference materials in earth sciences.

4. Collaborates with other subject specialists to assure coverage of
interdisciplinary areas that lie outside conventional subject boundaries.

5. In conjunction with the Head of Branner Library, participates as
appropriate in donor and related development activities in support of
the Libraries, working closely with the Library Development Officer and
with the Associate University Librarian for Collections and Services.
Encourages and cultivates close relations with donors of funds and
materials relating to Earth Sciences.

6. Contributes to planning, policies, and programs of the Science and
Engineering Resource Group. Serves on committees and manages library
projects as appropriate.

7. Depending upon qualifications and the needs of the Libraries, assumes
assignments in related fields with similar duties to those listed above.

Qualifications:

1. Knowledge of and interest in academic or research libraries and the
research environment in major universities are required. Strongly desire
a master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library and information science
school or the equivalent in training and experience in understanding and
providing information to a user population. Course work, degree, or
academic / government / corporate library experience in the earth
sciences or physical geography is highly desired.

2. Demonstrated knowledge of the commercial and non-commercial sources
of materials in Earth Sciences and their channels of distribution and
acquisition is highly desired. Ability to evaluate online information
products and services are desired.

3. Strong understanding of computers and data are required; familiarity
of GIS and imagery use and implementation is desired. Effective use of
current technologies, an interest to stay abreast of technological
advances, the ability to acquire new technological skills and resolve
problems in a resourceful and timely manner is required.

4. Demonstrated information seeking skills, including database and
Internet searching, and familiarity with earth sciences resources in
digital formats, are required. Experience in Earth Sciences reference is
desirable.

5. Demonstrated capacity to work effectively and collegially with staff
at all levels as well as with faculty and students is required. Ability
to perform effectively in and contribute successfully to a diverse,
multicultural workplace environment is also required.

6. Evidence of the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and
in writing, is required. Strong analytical and organizational skills are
required. Ability to manage time and multiple projects in a complex,
changing environment with a positive, flexible, creative, and innovative
attitude is highly desired.

7. Demonstrated potential to make professional accomplishments relevant
to the responsibilities of this position is required. These may include
scholarly publications, teaching, and library-related publications and
presentations.



Background

The libraries of Stanford University consist of roughly eight million
volumes and over 500 staff members and include the University Libraries
system and five “coordinate” (school or institution) libraries. The
Stanford University Libraries consist of a main research library (Green
Library) and twelve research branch libraries serving the sciences,
social sciences and humanities.

The Branner Earth Sciences Library and Map Collections is one of seven
science and engineering research branch libraries that form the Science
and Engineering Resource Group. Branner has primary responsibility for
providing services to the faculty, students, and staff within the School
of Earth Sciences (Geological & Environmental Sciences, Geophysics,
Energy Resources Engineering, and Environmental Earth System Science).
Branner also provides GIS/Maps services to the entire Stanford
community. The collection contains approximately 250,000 volumes,
275,000 maps, and 2,200 serial subscriptions. The budget for collections
is approximately $480,000 and includes numerous endowed funds. The staff
consists of 3.50 FTE professional staff and 3.0 FTE support staff plus
student assistants.

The Science and Engineering Resource Group is part of the Collections
and Services Program and reports to the Associate University Librarian
for Science and Engineering Libraries.
