Map folks,

We are going through a library expansion/renovation/reorganization project
here, and the Library Administration's new plan is to combine Maps and
Microforms, with the map collection out in the open with the general book
collection (as opposed to being in the traditional separate room). The
fuzzy logic for the combination is that Microforms has the copy service
(where we send folks for map copying) and a large staff that can assist
folks with maps all hours the library is open (Maps is now open 8am-6pm and
1-5pm on Sat/Sun). And the idea of having the map cabinets out in the open
in a high traffic area is to increase map awareness and use.

I have doubts about this concept, and I'm really upset about being
relocated in the basement after spending the last 20 years in my current
location on the 3rd floor with windows on two sides and a commanding view
of campus.

Anyway, do any of you have any experience with open map stacks you'd like
to share? What issues do I need to be aware of?

Thanks,
Jim
