  I think I heard that LC only applies GMDs to materials that require the
use of external equipment to view the material.  Therfore, maps do not
get a GMD.

At Indiana University, I add the GMD "Cartographic Material" locally to
map catalog records using a macro.  I think that it aids patrons in
identifying maps.
