In other words, the lines we see running vertically on the map demonstrate
horizontal direction.  Similarly, the lines we see as horizontals on a map
measure vertical direction.

Maybe that's why I invariably get them mixed up.  Dare I admit that to convince myself that I know which is which I think of the Jimmy Buffett song Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes.  I also have to imagine myself writing something to be sure which hand is my right hand.  I guess spatial orientation is not my strong point.
