Announcement of Vacancy

Position: Map/GIS Librarian

Salary: Assistant Librarian I to Associate Librarian V ($37,920 -
$56,256)

Open: Immediately

Scope:  The Government Information and Maps Department is located in the
Peter J. Shields Library, one of five units of the UC Davis General
Library, and encompassing the Government Information, Maps, Microforms,
and
Current Periodicals Collections.  The Department includes five
librarians and 8.5 FTE technical and administrative staff.

The Map Collection is the fourth largest in the UC system, consisting of
more than 250,000 sheet maps, 42,000 microfiche, 65,000 aerial
photographs, in addition to printed guides, references tools, and
atlases.
Map processing staff consists of 1 FTE Library Assistant and .5 FTE
student assistance; reporting to the department technical processing
staff
supervisor.  This position reports to the Head of the Government
Information and Maps Department.

Responsibilities:  We are seeking a creative, enthusiastic librarian to
manage and develop the Library's printed and digital map and aerial
photography collections, provide reference, research consultation and
user
education services for cartographic materials as well as geospatial
data,
to advise on cataloging of maps and remote sensing imagery, to develop
and
implement digitization projects for cartographic materials, and to
assist
with development and maintenance of map collection web pages.

* As subject specialist in cartography, this position is responsible for
developing the print and digital collections to support campus research
needs and interests.

* The Map/GIS Librarian is responsible for the development of the
Library's
GIS program, which consists of data collection and dissemination,
maintenance of the Library's GIS website, collaboration in campus-wide
GIS
activities, and relevant user education services.

* The Map/GIS Librarian has primary responsibility for reference and
consultation assistance to users of cartographic and geospatial data.

* The MAP/GIS librarian assists in the development of standards for
bibliographic access for the collection, including metadata standards
for
digital materials, and advises on the processing of cartographic
materials.

* The Map/GIS Librarian provides course-related and other instruction
for
the maps collection, develops user guides and may participate in other
library instructional activities.

* The Map/GIS Librarian participates in planning, design and maintenance
of
the Map Collection web site.

* The Map/GIS Librarian develops and implements map digitization
projects in
consultation with departmental and library staff.

* The Map/GIS Librarian also participates in providing reference service
for
government information, maps, and microforms.  Schedule includes
occasional
evening and weekend assignments.

Required Qualifications: Graduate degree in librarianship from an
ALA-accredited institution or its equivalent. Demonstrated knowledge of
maps and cartographic resources. Familiarity with geographic information
systems (GIS) and digital spatial data.  Strong commitment to providing
excellent public service.  Knowledge of computing technology and data
formats, including geospatial data applications.  Ability to develop and
deliver discipline-related instruction to faculty and students.  Ability
to
work effectively with colleagues, students, faculty and staff in a
rapidly changing, complex and multi-cultural environment.

Preferred Qualifications: Academic background in earth sciences or
geography.  Experience providing public service for cartographic
materials
in an academic library.  Experience in user instruction.  Experience in
developing library collections. Strong computer skills, including
experience in web site design and maintenance.

vacation and 12 days of sick leave per annum.  The University has an
