News Advisory:

The Society for the East Sea of the Republic of Korea will host the
"International Seminar on the Naming of Seas" in Washington D.C. from
Oct. 6 to Oct. 8 to discuss the historical background vital to the
accurate naming of the sea that lies between Korea and Japan. The
seminar will bring together renowned scholars of history, geography, and
representatives from important NGOs to engage in an objective and
thorough discussion of the long history of employing the "East Sea" as a
proper noun to describe this body of water.

The presentation will consider the significance of the name "East Sea"
and the later distortions in the historical record, which have caused
such confusion. The seminar is the eleventh in a series of annual
meetings that aim to establish the term "East Sea" as the international
standard for all the nations of the world. Important scholars from the
United States, France, Russia, China, Belgium, the Netherlands, Republic
of Korea, and Australia will present academic papers outlining the
historical precedents in cartography, historical records popular usage
and linguistics for the use of the term "East Sea."

This international seminar is historically significant because of the
interest shown by the International Geographic Union (IGU) in the East
Sea. The International Geographic Union is a scholarly organization that
has 106 member nations with a history of 136 years of authoritative
research. Its Secretary General Dr. Ronald Abler will participate in the
panel discussion of this seminar.

The seminar will be held at the Cosmo Club, 2121 Massachusetts Ave., NW,
in Washington D.C.
