Subject: Humboldt Abyss / Martel Sinkhole
Sender: Mike Flannigan <[log in to unmask]>

I'm looking for location data (lat/long) for a pair of sinkholes
in Venezuela. They are (or were) called the Humboldt Abyss
and Martel Sinkhole. They are located on the Sarisarinama
Plateau at approximately 050000N0634600W.

I looked at the foreign GNIS at
http://164.214.2.59/gns/html/index.html
but they are not listed. Also did an extensive web search
with no luck. Any other ideas?

If anybody knows about the area I am also interested in the
best way to visit the site. This is a very remote site. The
largest sinkhole is 1,200 ft in diameter and 1,000 ft deep, yet
it's existence was reportedly unknown until 1954. It was first
visited by scientists in 1974. In 1978 there were still no roads
anywhere near this site.
