Please find Map and Geography Round Table (MAGERT) ALA 2006 Annual conference schedule from our web site (http://magert.whoi.edu/ann06.html) and a brief description of our programs below.

Saturday, 1:30 - 3:30 pm MCC Rm. 397

Where are we with coordinates?

In the library world, coordinates of longitude and latitude to identify locations have been used almost exclusively in the cataloging of cartographic materials. With the increasing use of Global Positioning Systems by the public, coordinates are becoming more
commonly used and understood. This program explores how adding coordinates to authority records and implementing more coordinates searching in OPACS can enable searchers to retrieve maps and other library materials about places more fully and precisely. Also to be explored is how such additions might be made.

Speakers: Jimmie Lundgren, University of Florida; Colleen Cahill, Library of Congress; Susan Moore, University of Northern Iowa.

Monday, 1:30 ? 3:30 pm MCC Rm. 291

Google Earth and GIS Services

Google Earth is a powerful GIS data visualization tool. This program will explain what you can do with Google Earth and how you can use their resources in finding location-based information. The program will also discuss the challenges and strategies of supporting GIS at MIT.

Speakers: Mark Aubin, software engineer at Google Earth and Lisa Sweeney, head of GIS Services for MIT Libraries.

Thanks,
-Wangyal
