There is one proposal of possible interest to the cartographic community
for the upcoming ALA Midwinter meeting. Proposal no. 2003-02 calls for
the definition of subfield u in field 538 (System Details Note) to
contain a URI that would link to a description of technical details
concerning how a digital resource was created. This would save space if
the details were the same for a digital collection and if the
information was lengthy.

I don't know if anyone involved in digitizing maps would be interested
in using the 538 field in this manner.
