Well, this is probably the last time I'll be sending this out. After
this annual ALA conference, the Machine-Readable Bibliographic
Information (MARBI) Committee will be disbanded. So, tune in later to
find out what happens.

In the meantime, MARBI has a fairly light schedule. There are two
proposals and two discussion papers.

Discussion paper 2013-DP05 asks about the potential usefulness of making
the first indicator in the 588 field a display constant controller. This
is the field used in serial cataloging to indicate what issue served as
the basis of the description and what the latest issue consulted was. I
imagine some may have used this field in map serial records.

Discussion paper 2013-DP06 covers an issue that came up from Proposal
2013-07 that MARBI approved at the 2013 midwinter meeting. In the
discussion on the proposal, the Subject Analysis Committee Subcommittee
on Genre/Form Implementation realized that there wasn't a way to record
chronological terms relating to the form/genre in the authorities
format. This discussion paper asks that MARBI consider adding field 388
- Chronological Term Representing Date or Time Period of Creation or
Origin of Work/Expression (R) to the authorities format.

Proposal 2013-09 calls for defining a subfield for qualifiers to
standard identifiers in the bibliographic, authority, and holdings
formats. Right now, if there's a qualifier you want to add to a ISBN, it
just follows after the ISBN in the same subfield. This causes problems
in matching on the ISBN. The proposal call for adding a $q to the 015,
020, 024 and 027 fields.

Proposal 2013-08 calls for adding a $7 to 8XX series fields to allow the
German libraries to handle series the way they do them.

The agenda for the MARBI meetings and the full papers and proposals can
