Subject: MARBI items of potential interest to the cartographic community

It looks as if MARC Advisory Committee may only be meeting once this ALA
annual. All the agenda items are listed for Saturday morning with Sunday
afternoon set aside for continuing the discussion from the previous
meeting. So if we get everything done on Saturday, we won't be meeting
Sunday.

Proposal 2010-08 suggests adding a $7 to the 034 field in the
bibliographic and authority formats to provide data of the encoding
scheme for the coordinates so that processing can be done without human
intervention. A code list will have to be created but the proposal
mentions the possibility of using "dd" for decimal degrees and "dms" for
degrees, minutes, and seconds.

Proposal 2010-06 concerns encoding the International Standard Name
Identifier in the bibliographic and authority formats. It would define
$0 for recording the authority record control number or standard number
preceded by the MARC code for the agency to which the control number
applies. This will allow for easier automated processing.

Proposal 2010-07 would add a code to the Leader/18 (Descriptive
cataloging form) in the bibliographic format that would indicate that
the record uses ISBD punctuation except for the ends of subfields. The
proposal comes from the German National Library where some ending
punctuation hasn't been used.
