Another term that's useful here is "Mental maps"

See about.com's definition:
http://geography.about.com/cs/culturalgeography/a/mentalmaps.htm

And: http://www.mentalmaps.info/

A classic book on the subject, "Mental maps," by Peter Gould and Rodney
White, has gone through several printings since 1974.

I am hoping the folks in Maps-L can help me find out some information
that I need for a workshop I am teaching.

The professor wants me to talk about the*/ use of maps and the concept
of psychological "mapping."/*

Any articles or books on the topic that you can suggest would be greatly
appreciated.
