Had we space enough, and trays, these withdrawals Alice, would be
crazed.

I can't speak for everyone, but: I don't believe that digital
reformatting or web availability really replaces the printed map.
For us at U of Virginia, it is totally about space. We simply
don't have room to retain all editions--I truly wish it were
otherwise. So we pull the outdated editions as new ones come in.

Before we offer them out we review what we pulled and retain items
that have likely historical import or use for the research/teaching
interests of our community. That doesn't mean some aren't gone
that I wish we had back.

We commit to retaining all editions of Virginia, and we frequently
claim offers for Virginia to ensure that we have multiples. I'm
not above going after other states when I think we've screwed up in
the past and I really need some older sheets of a particular area
because of requests.
