You may want to go to the Library of Congress' American Memory website
for their digital maps collection at:
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/browse/ListSome.php?category=Maps
When doing a search for Puerto Rico, be sure to also use "Porto Rico" as
that is the way the American government spelled it during the 19th
century. Puerto Rico brought in 48 hits while Porto Rico brought about
13 hits. A search for "San Juan" brought about 30 hits.
You may also want to contact the government of Puerto Rico as well at:
http://www2.pr.gov/Pages/Contactenos.aspx
or you can contact the City of San Juan at:
http://www.sanjuan.pr/servicios/contactanos.aspx
Go ahead and write your email in English as there will be English
speakers who will be able to reply to you.
I just did a search in the San Juan website for their library
(biblioteca) and out popped their Carnegie Library (Biblioteca Carnegie)
which has the following phone number (787) 722-4739.
There is also the:
* Museo de San Juan (San Juan Museum) which is charged to preserve the
history of the city.
      (787) 724-1875. Source:

You can find a list of San Juan museums at:
http://www.puertoricodaytrips.com/old-san-juan-museums/
Try and see if those resources can help you.

Hi all,

I have a patron interested in maps of San Juan, Puerto Rico from 1805 to
1851. She is trying to determine the dates of construction of the
Miraflores Canal which separates Miraflores Island from the mainland.
The earliest map we have found showing the canal is located in David
Rumsey’s collection from 1851
(http://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/s/z9i6bb (located in the San
Juan inset map)).

Any information, maps or otherwise, on the topic of the canal’s
construction is appreciated. Nuestro españolesun poco malo.

Thanks,

Evan
