The Special Libraries Association (SLA) (
http://www.sla.org/content/SLA/AssnProfile/index.cfm) was founded in
1909 in the state of New York and is now the international association
representing the interests of thousands of information professionals in
over eighty countries worldwide. A historical information
<http://www.sla.org/content/SLA/AssnProfile/History/index.cfm> section
outlines the history of the association and summarizes information about
past presidents, conferences and other association information.

SLA's vision, mission and core value statements
<http://www.sla.org/content/SLA/AssnProfile/slanplan/index.cfm> were
revised and adopted in October 2003. Special librarians are information
resource experts who collect, analyze, evaluate, package, and
disseminate information to facilitate accurate decision-making in
corporate, academic, and government settings.

Geography & Map Section of SOC

SLA is also organized in 24 Divisions representing subject interests,
fields, or types of information-handling techniques. Each Division
elects officers, publishes a bulletin or newsletter, and most conduct
professional programs during the Association's Annual Conferences.
Affiliation with one Division at no charge is an important option
available as part of SLA membership.

The Geography and Map Division was one of the 25 subject divisions
within the SLA <http://www.sla.org> until 2003, when it officially
became a section of the Social Science Division
<http://www.sla.org/division/dsoc/News/merger-approved.html>. The
Geography and Map Division was established in 1941 to encompass all
aspects of the production, procurement, processing, and utilization of
geographic and cartographic materials and includes the professions of
geography and map librarianship. With the merger with the Social Science
Division, the Geography and Map section will be able to continue to meet
this need and offer programming at the national level without the
financial strain of being an independent division.
