The Japan GIS/Mapping Sciences Resource Guide is the first
comprehensive reference source for Japanese GIS and mapping and
provides a framework for future development. It attempts to bring
together under one cover as much information as reasonably possible
on the title and topic, without commercial endorsements of products,
vendors, or contractors. The resource guide is designed to serve as
an introduction to the intriguing, extensive, and varied world of
Japan's GIS, map and geospatial data products, activities and
information sources. It serves primarily to help English-speaking
engineers, geographers, cartographers, geologists, production
managers, computer and data processing professionals, and marketing
and sales executives working in Japan or dealing with their Japanese
counterparts in the West. Its objective is to provide, not a list of
every map published nor even presently available (such a list would
be of little use to most people), but rather information about the
many types of maps available from government map publishing agencies
particularly those published under national mapping standards and
that are highly useful as base maps (e.g., topographic maps). In
regard to Japan-related digital geospatial data the author hopes to
provide as long a list as can be reasonably obtained. Additions,
corrections, and comments are welcome.
