Alice,
You are asking some VERY interesting questions! Your previous email,
posted to maps-l, asked for map libraries which have been active on the
Web, to send in their URLs so that you can point to them from your
homepage. It would be extremely useful if you would be kind enough to
assemble the responses you receive and to post this on maps-l (better
than waiting to have the info published in a journal, to my way of
thinking). And now you are asking about the post-ARLGIS situation, and
that too is a very interesting question. Many of us have probably seen
and read the recent article by patrick McGlamery and Melissa Lamont in
Database Dec 1994; this discusses activities at Duke, U of Virginia, NYPL
(close to home, isn't that?), U of Connecticut, etc. But what
about other institutions, whether or not they were involved in ARL-GIS.

We in Canada are very interested in progress that is being made south of
the border (that's south of OUR border) and elsewhere. You are probably
aware that we are still trying to get the Canadian version of ARL-GIS off
the ground. Now that ArcView 2 is available, we may be able to get this
kick started again. I very much look forward to reading whatever
responses you receive to this latest missive and support your offer to
publish in a map library journal (how about in the ACMLA Bulletin??). At
the University of Waterloo we are still experimenting with MapInfo; we
purchased ver 3.0 of MapInfo and MapBasic, as well as ver 2.0 of ArcLink
which converts ArcInfo Export to MapInfo format. Unfortuately, ver 2.0
is a bit flaky (IMHO), so I am making plans to acquire ver 3.0, just
released. For data, we have the Street Network File from Stats Canada
(over 100 MB) of detailed street info, address ranges, street names,
major features such as rivers, parks, etc. for Canadian cities across
Canada. We have also acquired census boundary files (census division,
census subdivisions) for the 1986 census--and will purchase the same for
the 1991 census when these files are available.
