Indeed, Gary North was unique. Didn't he invent the North Arrow?

Seriously, he personally helped me establish my library as a USGS map
depository when I started my career here 33 years ago. He loved to take
photographs and shared his slide shows with us at conferences. His
adventures in Russia in 1991 are legendary.

Gary was a "one of a kind" in the federal government - someone who
understood there was a world outside of the government and Washington.
He recognized the value of libraries to enhance and disseminate
cartographic information and he went out of his way to include libraries
as partners and was a real friend of map libraries and a great friend to
many map librarians. He was a good man and will be missed but we will
still have the many memories of someone who cared.

Worked with Gary in IFLA and was trapped with him in Moscow during the
IFLA Annual Conference and the Russian Coup in August 1991.

      Dear Friends and Family,

Gary North died on Tuesday morning, October 29, at approximately 4 am.
He ended up in the hospital on Monday for treatment to a couple of
wounds on his leg. His heart stopped, in his sleep. Doctors came
rushing in but he did not survive. Gary suffered much in the past
month
and a half since his heart failed him at the end of August, but at
that
      point, he was revived.
