The Consortium for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN)
provides online access to Bureau of the Census data. In response to the request
for files identifying code identifications and populations for states,
counties, MSAPMSAs, PUMAs, etc., CIESIN has made the Equivalency Table for the
1990 1% Public Use Microdata Sample(PUMS) available for anonymous ftp.
Instruction for pick-up follows:

ftp infoserver.ciesin.org<cr>
cd /l1/ftp/dropbox<cr>
binary<cr>
get EQ1.90.Z<cr> (673179b)

This uncompresses to 4408020b.

CIESIN also provides access to census data through two software products.
EXPLORE works interactively with the 1% PUMS files from 1980 and 1990. EXPLORE
rectangularizes the hierarchical household and person records and allows you to
perform custom cross tabulations or means of one item within categories of a
second item. You can apply up to ten additional variables as selection filters.
EXPLORE answers queries of these 2.6M record files in 3-5 seconds under normal
operating conditions.

EXTRACT rectangularizes data and enables CIESIN to do custom extractions from
PUMS files back to 1960, or March CPS files back to 1968. You define the
composition of your extract, we run it and make it available for ftp back to
your home analytical system. Extracts are in ASCII space delimited format, so
they are easily ingested by standard statistical software.

We are beta testing EXPLORE at this time and we'd be pleased to discuss the
beta test with interested individuals. Send inquiries to

US populations from '90 census online?

Is there an anonymous FTP site with 1990 census data?
I'm especially interested in getting county FIPS code,
place name, and population. If anyone has that file
handy, I'd sure appreciate getting a copy.
