------------------
We will be presenting a poster on "Problems with Places in Library Catalogs"
on Monday, June 28, 2004 from 1:00-2:30 PM.

Our purposes in the poster are to demonstrate some of the less satisfactory
aspects of the ways we are now able to provide access and description for
maps in our catalogs and to look towards some improvements that may develop.

One of the possible improvements that interest us is the addition of
coordinates in data fields to authority records for places. This would
entail having a proposal for the specific changes submitted to MARBI and
approved for addition to the MARC Format for Authority Records. Such a
proposal would be greatly strengthened by the ideas and support of the
community of Map Librarians such as you. An early draft of this proposal
will be available at the poster.

Some of you may be unable to attend the poster session, perhaps in order to
see the program below:
ALA -MAGERT PROGRAM, MONDAY JUNE28, 2004,1:30PM-3:30PM
TITLE: Scanning the Sunshine State: the University of Florida Map & Imagery
Library Experience
Location: Renaissance Orlando Resort SeaWorld, Palani Sailfish rooms.

We will be happy to email you a copy of the draft and will eagerly await
your comments and suggestions.

We look forward to seeing many of you in Orlando, and encourage you to bring
hats and umbrellas against the sun and rain.
