What do you want to use the scanner for? A standard off-the-shelf 600 dpi
scanner works just fine for most purposes if you only want to scan 8.5 x 11"
maps. If you are scanning slides, you will need a special slide scanner.
Oversized scanning is an expensive proposition, especially if you need to scan
anything larger than 11 x 17". If you are scanning 8 x 10" photographic
transparencies of large maps, I would suggest you consider a 1200 dpi scanner
(Hewlett Packard makes one for around $400). Otherwise 600 dpi and 24 bit color
should be plenty for anything you might want to do with maps. I, too, am no
expert in this field, and would be curious to see what others have to say.
