Discussion Paper 2002-DP02 covers the possibility of changing the names of
specific 008 fields because of new terminology or changes in the scope of the
fields. These include changing the names of the 008 for Books, Serials, Maps,
and Computer Files. Maps would be changed to Cartographic Material.

Proposal no.: 2002-09 would remove the current fixed length nature of subfields
d, e, f, and g to allow for the recording of both standard and decimal degrees
for coordinates in the 034 field.

Proposal no.: 2002-01 would allow the inclusion of a URI (in a subfield u) in
field 670 (Source of data found) in authority records.

Proposal no.: 2002-08 would change the indicator value in the first indicator
for the "U.S. Dept. of Defense Classification" from 0 to 1 in field 052.

Proposal no.: 2002-03 would expand the definition of field 046 to allow for the
recording of dates of various types. The proposal includes adding a subfield j
for - Date modified, subfield k for - Date created, and subfields m and n for -
Date valid (m being for the beginning date valid and n for ending date valid).
Subfield 2 would be added to indicate the source of the date scheme. The
proposal would also make the 046 field repeatable for different date schemes.

There will also be a couple more discussion papers that may be of interest.
DP2002-05 covers guidelines for nonfiling control characters for the MARC
formats (these characters would be used to set off materials to be disregarded
when filing or indexing). DP 2002-07 lists some changes suggested by the
British Library and other agencies in the UK to facilitate alignment with
UKMARC.
