Subject: REÂ : Damascus - Beirut highway

Dear Amanda,

About maps between Damacus and Beirut, the best sources is the 1:50 000 map of Syria published by the French army during the Mandat. This map have been copied more recently by the Syrian army. For Lebanon there is also a very good topographical map at scale 1:20 000, published by the Lebanon army in 1963. Copies of theses series are conserved at IFPO research center in Beirut and in Damascus. They are also in Paris at BNF and IGN. In 1983, the Soviet Army published a series at 1:50 000 from Lebanon (and maybe from Syria). Digital copies of theses maps (Lebanon only) are available at the IFPO center in Beirut. For more information about cartography of this country see the Cartomed web site : http://cartomed.mmsh.univ-aix.fr <http://cartomed.mmsh.univ-aix.fr/> .

Subject: Damascus - Beirut highway

Hello everyone,

I have a student who is trying to find the elevation information and maps of the Damascus - Beirut highway. We don't have any appropriate topographical maps in the library. He has tried Google Maps, and online searches -- but it's hard to find good maps of Syria as a result of government restrictions. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Best,

Amanda
