We usually use sheets of glass. Some of these are spare glass shelves
fom display cases (the edges are ground smooth and not sharp).  Needs to
be thick enough to not break and to provide necessary weight (i.e., no
window glass!), but small enough in area for a person to handle (that
eliminates a 3/4" thick glass door from a 1930's department store!).
You could even get glass of desired thickness cut to order at any glass
store very cheaply.

We've used these shelves for years without an accident. People approach
them with respect.

Glass distributes weight evenly across the maps.

If they've been rolled up a long time, you still might have a problem.
