Several folk have informed me that David Deckelbaum, longtime assistant to
Carlos Hagen has been appointed the map librarian at UCLA. He has been working
recently in reference, so the appointment does not open up a new map library
job apparently. Congratulations to David Deckelbaum, and welcome back to maps!

Comments on the dearth of appointments focus on the unique situations for each
of these jobs; the explosion of map libraries after WWII, followed by the
necessary implosion 25-40 years later as a lot of retirements occurred; the
downsizingand merging of map libraries; the low salaries offered for
incredibly complex job descriptions/requirements; the economy.

thanks everyone for your input--things were clarified a bit. Now if the
appointment could just get made, and those jobs would open up!
