        Announcement of Library Vacancy

        Title: Map/GIS Librarian, Librarian I or II (LIB 108)

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Head of the Government Documents Library,
the successful candidate will take responsibility for the management and
operation of the Map/GIS Library. This includes: technical services and
public services functions as well as collection development and management
in the areas of maps and geography.  Plans and implements GIS services in
collaboration with other units in the Libraries and in the University's
teaching departments and research centers.  Establishes policies, implements
procedures, and develops plans for effective Map/GIS Library operations.
Works with the regional depository librarian and the Government Documents
Library staff to monitor the MSU/Library of Michigan selective housing
agreement for maps and geospatial data.  Further develops the Map/GIS
Library WWW site to deliver information, software, metadata and geospatial
files to users.

May also provide scheduled reference service at the Main Library Reference
Desk including weekend and evening hours.   Participates in professional and
research activities and serves on Library and University committees as
elected or assigned; other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Librarian I: Required: ALA-accredited MLS; high degree of computer literacy
including a working knowledge of mapping and GIS software and technology,
including ArcView GIS software; strong commitment to public service; strong
oral and written communication skills; ability to work effectively with
faculty, students and staff; ability to work as part of a team; preparation
and commitment to conduct independent scholarship consistent with a
librarian appointment; capacity and commitment to engage independently in
continuing professional development.  Desired: Knowledge of cataloging and
metadata creation.

Librarian II: Required: the same as above with 3 or more years professional
experience; demonstrated ability in maps or geography-related reference and
instructional services; demonstrated ability to take on leadership role in a
rapidly changing environment.  Desired: supervisory experience; knowledge of
cataloging and metadata creation.

Campus and Libraries: Michigan State University Libraries serve more than
4,000 faculty and academic staff, 34,000 undergraduates and 9,000 graduate
and professional students on a park-like campus of over 5,000 acres.  The
Main Library and 14 branch libraries have combined holdings of over 4
million volumes.  East Lansing is a community of approximately 50,000
located adjacent to Lansing, the state capital.

Compensation: Minimum salary is $33,000.  MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY provides
