Dear Angie;

Not sure if you've seen this or anyone has sent it to Maps-L.

>With a deep regret we inform, that on September, 2-nd, 2007 suddenly Rudolf
>Kazakov-founder and the general director of Soyuzkarta-Impex and Ruskarta has
>died.
>Despite of this heavy loss Ruskarta will continue the business, that Rudolf
>Kazakov has begun, and carry out all obligations before foreign partners.

> Leonid Ivanov, senior manager

For those who may not know of him, Rudolf Kazakov was the official source
of much of the Russian mapping.

I have known Rudolf since my first visit to Moscow in about 1988 and have
long considered him a friend as well as a colleague. Rudolf's encyclopedic
knowledge of Russian and former USSR mapping always made him a first stop
for information on any mapping or imagery in that part of the world. While
Rudolf was a tough negotiator (his prices often set by the military and not
himself), he always met his agreements and obligations, something for which
other Russian map suppliers were not always known. Thus his reputation in
the world of mapping has always been stellar.

On a personal note, Rudolf's friendship, dry humor and wit will be sadly
missed. Rudolf always made time and I knew that multiple shots of vodka
were waiting to accompany serious business as well as friendly bantering
and story-swapping. I will miss him.

Cheers
Russell
