Subject: IFLA G&M Nominations 2009-2013

Would you like to be involved in the world-wide activities of our
profession? Would you like to sit at the table where cataloging and
operational issues are discussed and passed on to national associations
and libraries? Would you like to visit many places that you are called
upon for cartographic assistance and learn more about their cultural and
geographic settings? Then please consider a nomination to the Geography
and Map Libraries Section, International Federation of Library
Associations and Institutions (IFLA).

There are current openings for members of the Standing Committee, but
nominations must be received by IFLA HQ by the end of January or first
of February 2009.

The first step is to ask if your library or association is a member of
IFLA. These organizations pay dues to IFLA, not the individual who is
nominated. Next you need to determine if your organization is member of
the Geography and Map Libraries Section #6. If not, they can add the
section for a nominal fee. In many cases, not all the allowed sections
are being used by the organization and there may be no additional charge
to add the G&M Section. Once membership in the G&M Section has been
confirmed, nomination forms need to be filled out. These forms were
sent by IFLA HQ to the responsible person in your organization, but if
not available, IFLA HQ will fax the necessary forms to that person. The
only cost to you is the actual meetings that you attend. If you cannot
attend, there would be no cost that year. Much of the G&M Section
business is conducted by e-mail, so all our members stay connected.

I hope you will consider a nomination for the Geography and Map
Libraries Section. Our next meetings are in Milan, Italy (Aug. 22 - 27,
2009), Brisbane, Australia (Aug. 2010), and San Juan, Puerto Rico
(Aug. 2011). The 2012 and 2013 meetings will be announced three years
before and will be in different geographic locations. IFLA tries to
meet in all parts of the world, to give everyone an opportunity to
attend at some point in time. 2001 was in Boston, USA; 2002 was in
Glasgow, Scotland; 2003 was in Berlin, Germany; 2004 was in Buenos
Aires, Argentina; 2005 was in Oslo, Norway; 2006 was in Seoul, South
Korea; 2007 was in Durban, South Africa; and 2008 was in Quebec City,
Canada. So there should be a meeting near you, no matter where in the
world you may be.
