Position Title:                    Cataloging Specialist for Government Documents and Maps (Library Technician I)

Position Number:              073850

Department:                       Mansfield Library

Closing Date:                     October 20, 2015

Work Schedule:                 Full-time, 12 months/year, 1.0 FTE

Salary:                                $11.657/hr

Union Affiliation:               MPEA

Probationary Period:        Six months minimum

The Cataloging Specialist is primarily responsible for providing bibliographic description and classification of general library materials (specifically government documents and maps) and for the creation, control and maintenance of bibliographic and authority data. The majority of the work is performed in a typical office environment, working at a computer. This position is responsible for all aspects of processing government documents received through the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP); establishing and modifying purchase orders for government document serials received from the Government Printing Office (GPO); claiming missing items in shipments; and other routine tasks associated with the federal depository program (such as offers and discards). 

 

This position is responsible for evaluating and analyzing current standards and best practices within the Library; problem solving and making independent decisions based on departmental, library, University, national and international policies, procedures, and standards; hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating student employees; serving on department or library wide committees, as necessary; and completing special projects independently or as a member of a project team.

 

This position is also responsible for identifying, locating, obtaining, cataloging, and classifying library materials; assisting with the acquisitions, receipt and processing of new materials and/or resources for the Library; providing bibliographic, holdings and other data assessment, quality control, and maintenance; and participating as part of a cataloging team by providing support for data maintenance and metadata creation for digital projects.

 

This position requires incumbent to develop working knowledge of both University and Library policies, procedures, and standards.

Required Skills

Basic to intermediate computer skills. Ability to work with multiple directories and files in a networked environment; use of the Microsoft Office Suite of products including Word, Excel, and Access; ability to learn and use a variety of specialized library related software;

Attention to detail;

Ability to organize and prioritize tasks;

Project management and problem solving;

Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with department members, faculty, staff, students, and outside vendors / company representatives;

Ability to search, evaluate, analyze, interpret, and manipulate a variety of bibliographic and holdings data. Ability to learn, understand and apply metadata rules and standards to a variety of materials;

Ability to learn a variety of standard library classification schemes (Dewey, SuDoc, LC, etc.);

Ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative.

Ability to manage time and resources;

Ability to handle multiple activities simultaneously in an environment of changing priorities;

Ability to lift, sort, shift, and organize library materials on bookshelves, which requires mobility and physical demands.

Ability to assist with maneuvering large carts of library material weighing up to 300 pounds, which requires mobility and physical demands.

Required Experience

High School/GED plus one (1) year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Understanding of and ability to use library catalog and acquisition software and to learn operations software such as OCLC Connexion, MarcEdit, and other batch editing library specific programs;

Ability to use Microsoft Excel at an intermediate to advanced level (includes use of formulas, macros, and pivot tables); 

Ability to use Microsoft Access at an intermediate level (includes the ability to create reports, import/export data, and develop new databases as needed);

Basic knowledge of and proficiency in applying national and international holdings data rules and standards;

Knowledge of and proficiency in interpreting, analyzing & applying national & international cataloging/metadata rules and standards to a variety of subject areas & formats (specifically government documents & maps);

Ability to select and create appropriate call numbers using a variety of standard library classification schemes (SuDoc, LC, etc.);

Basic knowledge of and proficiency in interpreting, analyzing and           applying established rules and standards of various thesauri and other controlled vocabularies, for the purpose of creating access points in bibliographic records and maintaining local authority files (LCSH, AAT, TGM, etc.);

Knowledge of and the ability to use digital collection management software such as CONTENTdm, Digital Commons, etc.

Familiarity with print and digital maps and an understanding of cartographic terminology.
