Subject: historic national boundaries

A researcher needs national boundaries in GIS format (global geographic
scope) for each year 1960-present. This is related to a study of
globalization over time and the relation of land area to other factors.

I can find digital national boundaries that are current and perhaps from
the mid-late 1990s. Has anyone been successful in obtaining historical
shapefiles for national boundaries, whether from public or private
sources?

Thank you in advance for any leads.

Anne
