Hi, For a fact many of the members of Maps-L are involved with national
spatial data iniatives, metadata, standards, etc. Unfortunately, or
perhaps fortunately depending uppon your point of view, what happens
whenever discussions become focused around a technical area such as
metadata, or GIS, then yet another list serv is created.

To give you an example, in Canada many of the members of the Association
of Canadian Map Libraries and Archives are working on national spatial
data infrastructure committees through Geoconnections. We are involved
in issues of government policy, Internet access and metadata standards,
framework data and sharing National Atlas of Canada data. Whatever we
report on that tends to go to the Canadian list serv, Carta, or into the
ACMLA Bulletin. I assume that we probably think that the American
mapllibrary community wouldn't be too much interested in the details,
even though Maps-L is an interrnational list serv.

I wouldn't be surprised to find that you get lots of responses from the
various metadata, standards and GIS communities regarding their list
servs, and you will find thaat many of these respondants belong to
Maps-L as well.
