SLA Geography and Map Division Program -- NYC

It is that time of year when all good map librarians are making plans to
attend their professional annual conferences. The first in this
summer's line-up is that of the Special Libraries Association Geography
and Map Division, the grande dame of map librarianship.
This is where it all began over 62 years ago. This is the 94th Annual
Conference of SLA and it is being held in New York City!! There are
still rooms available for under $100, if you search the hotel discount
websites. This is a very important meeting for the future of SLA G&M
and we need as many of you as possible in New York, June 8 -11, 2003.

Just three days later, on June 14, the 20th International Conference on
the History of Cartography begins at Harvard University, Cambridge,
Massachusetts. It moves to the Osher Map Library in Portland, Maine on
June 18, and concludes on June 20, with a lobster bake on Peaks Island,
Casco Bay, just in time for the ALA MAGERT meeting in Toronto, starting
June 21.

Feel free to relax during July, because the 69th General Conference and
Council of the International Federation of Library Associations and
Institutions (IFLA) does not begin until August 1st. The meeting is
being held in Berlin, Germany, with the first standing committee meeting
of the Geography and Map Libraries Section on Saturday, August 2, 2003.
Highlights include visits to the Map Department of the Berlin State
Library, Berlin Geographical Society, a trip by rail to Leipzig to visit
the Institute fer Laenderkunde, local and international speakers,
vendors, and of course the legendary IFLA receptions and entertainment
in the evenings. This is where you rub shoulders with your library's
top management and have an opportunity to set policy for the future of
your profession. You can get more information at www.ifla.org . Both
SLA and ALA have representatives that attend this meeting, so be sure to
speak to them about any of your concerns at your national meeting this
June.

I hope that you will find some professional meeting to attend this
summer. We all need your support.
