In response to Philip Ethington's comments below, I routinely have my
students estimate land uses with point-sampling techniques and maps. If
someone will supply or direct me to accurate maps and/or photos of the
L.A. city and region, I will assign this to my class next spring, along
with readings on the Davis controversy and the politics of scholarship and
methods. The maps or photos must have sufficient resolution to discern
roads and other concrete uses from non-concrete. In return, I will supply
the list with a methodologically documented estimate of the percent of
concrete land use both in LA and the greater region.

BTW: Is the greater region the area covered by SCAG? This may be too big
even for an entire class. Perhaps others on the list would be willing to
cooperate in a multi-university joint venture.

P.S. For those of you who've been reading too many French theorists,
"concrete" here is not the same as the difference between "concrete" and
"abstract." :)
