Prepared for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the
geologic map of the Helen Planitia quadrangle is the latest addition to
a series of maps covering the planet Venus. This map is based on data
from the Magellan spacecraft.

The Magellan spacecraft orbited Venus from August 10, 1990, until it
plunged into the Venusian atmosphere on October 12, 1994. Approximately
950 orbits of high-resolution gravity observations were obtained between
September 1992 and May 1993 while Magellan was in an elliptical orbit.
An additional 1500 orbits were obtained following orbit circularization
in mid-1993. These data exist as a 75 degree by 75 degree harmonic
field. Mission objectives for the project included (1) improving the
knowledge of the geological processes, surface properties, and geologic
history of Venus by analysis of surface radar characteristics,
topography, and morphology and (2) improving the knowledge of the
geophysics of Venus by analysis of Venusian gravity.

The Helen Planitia quadrangle (V-52) is located in the southern
hemisphere of Venus between latitude 25 degree south and 50 degree
south, and between longitude 240 degree east and 270 degree east.
Regionally the map area is located at the southern limit of an area of
enhanced tectonomagmatic activity and extensional deformation marked by
a triangle that has highland apexes at Beta, Alta, and Themis Regiones
(BAT anomaly) and is connected by the large extensional belts of Devana,
Hecate, and Parga Chasmata. The BAT anomaly covers approximately 20
percent of the Venusian surface.
