Dear Folks, Please plan to join us in Montreal this summer. Following is an ou
tline of the Geography and Map Division, Special Libraries Association program
Several specific programs focus on GIS of all things.
At least two moderators are needed because of previously planned moderators'
schedule changes, and inability to be in Montreal. SLA G&M members who would
like to moderate a program [put it on the olde resume!] may contact me at the
email address below.

About registration:
--You may register on siteat the Convention Center or you may contact S.L.A.
headquarters and request that they send you a copy of the program. Email
[log in to unmask] or call her at 202-234-4700, ext. 645. She is in Washington, D.C.
at headquarters.
Registration forms must be received by May 15th for advance rates.

Cataloging Geospatial Data in Digital Form/ With the influx of
yet more formats into the modestly termed "map collections" of today's
libraries, we are faced with figuring out ways to provide users with quick,
easy, accurate access to digital data. The answer is, as always, cataloging --
but how? Intended for both map and non-map librarians.

Seizing the Opportunity--Providing an effective environment
for the use of geographic information systems in libraries./ GIS is often not
conceived as a coherent activity in libraries. This paper describes a
methodology to make GIS more useful, economical and better coordinated in
library settings.

Unintended Access--Issues and concerns in enabling access to
public information through geographic information systems./ Data in a GIS
might enable undesirable uses of public information not intended by database
creators, such as redlining, intrusive custom marketing, impacts on individual
privacy and on commercial enterprises.

11:30 - 12:45 GIS transforming our world: standards for reference service II.
Moderator: Elaine Clement, Pennsylvania State University

Public Library Users and GIS, an examination of the GIS+
project in Florida./ Reporting on research into users' needs for spatial
information, this paper looks at the role of the Internet, and especially
describes a research project studying public library users of geographic
information systems.

Diane Powell, Florida Mental Health Institute
The use of geographic and map information in evaluating
neighbourhood use of social services./ In developing neighborhood assessments,
information needs include the infrastructure of the neighborhood, census and
socio-economic data mapped to the block level. This paper walks the non-map or
non-GIS specialist, unfamiliar with GIS, through an actual neighborhood needs
assessment, and will include examples of GIS use in social service evaluation
and design.

Kathleen Eisenbeis, Yale University
EOSDIS--What's Up? A description of NASA's Earth Observing
System data and information system [EOSDIS]. A member of NASA's select
committee for defining the user model, Eisenbeis will describe NASA's vision
for libraries in this information system.
Martin Jean, St. Lawrence Centre, Environment Canada
He will focus on archiving data, and providing access to
archived data files which can be analyzed by GIS, spatial or multivariate
analysis. Such data files are valuable in the study of environmental problems,
especially where the evolution of natural systems is important, and where
these systems may be studied by multiple disciplines.

"Le Tour de la Montagne: A geo-architectural tour of Montreal."
We plan to return to the convention center by 3 p.m.
Led by David Hanna, Professor in Urban Historical Geography at University of
Quebec. Our bus will take us to Westmount and Outremont, and the multiethnic
Plateau, where we will have lunch on our own at the Greek restaurant Jardin de
Panos. Lunch costs are in addition to the field trip ticket cost.
