I am pleased to announce the appointment of Barbara J. Story
as the new head of the Geography and Map Division's Cataloging
Unit, effective March 20, 1995. In this posiition she will
exercise overall responsibility for directing the operations of
the Cataloging Unit, including supervising a staff of 14 atlas
catalogers, map catalogers, and technical information
specialists, maintaining the Division's "Map Cataloging Manual,"
and serving as liaison to Library of Congress committees dealing
with cataloging. The Cataloging Unit catalogs cartographic
materials in all formats, including maps, atlases, globes,
microforms, relief models, and, after the implementation of
format integration, digital spatial data sets.
Ms. Story has extensive cataloging experience in a variety
of formats. She began her career as a Motion Picture Cataloging
and Processing Librarian in the Library's Motion Picture,
Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound Division in 1976. After a leave
absence to return to school, she worked as a Copyright Cataloger
in the Audiovisual Section of the Copyright Office's Cataloging
Division from 1985 to 1987. Ms. Story then returned to the
Motion Picture, Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound Division where
she held the position of Cataloger from 1987 to 1990. In October
1990 Ms. Story joined the staff of the Geography and Map Division
as an Atlas Cataloger. During 1993 and 1994 she served as Acting
Head of the Division's Cataloging Unit, supervising a staff of
13 atlas and map catalogers and technical information
          specialists, for two two-month rotations.

          Ralph Ehrenberg
          Chief, Geography and Map Division.
