Subject: India / Kashmir: maps get WWF in trouble

Reported in the Melbourne "Age" last week:
*******************************************************************
Banned
India has banned a $A2.4 million project to save tigers after maps were
published that depicted large parts of the northern state of Jammu and
Kashmir as being in Pakistan. The Environment Ministry objected to the
Worldwide Fund for Nature's interpretation of India's disputed border with
Pakistan and has withdrawn permission for the organisation's Tiger
Conservation Program. There are an estimated 3750 tigers left in India, 60
per cent of the world's total. At the start of the century there were an
estimated 40,000 in India. WWF International's office in India has closed.
WWF has sent a proof of a new edition of the map to the Indian Government
in a bid to reinstate the program.
***************************************************************

I also note the WWF has had to change its web address in the US to a
different name because of similarity to a theatrical sporting 'contest'
there...
