Hello again from the University of Georgia where the excitement on 
campus is steadily growing as the weekend approaches. Bulldog 
students, alumni and fans are preparing for the football 
season-opening contest against Georgia Southern and a showdown 
between two Heisman Trophy hopefuls - one of them being UGA's 
quarterback Quincy Carter.  Georgia fans are reminded that new

NEWS

GEORGIA ALUMNI AND ATHLETIC ASSOCIATIONS OFFER PRE-GAME ALTERNATIVES:
UGA's National Alumni Association will host a pre-game party in 
Memorial Hall for members prior to each home football contest.  Doors 
open two hours prior to kick off and refreshments will be available 
free-of-charge.  The Athletic Association will provide a shuttle 
service from points on campus to Sanford Stadium on game day.  For

GROUNDBREAKING OF NEW  STUDENT LEARNING CENTER SCHEDULED:
The University of Georgia will officially break ground Sept. 1 on a 
new $43 million, 200,000-square-foot Student Learning Center that 
will rise in the center of campus on a former parking lot south of 
the Fine Arts Building and west of the University Bookstore. 
President Michael F. Adams, joined by Provost Karen Holbrook, will 
preside over the 10 a.m. ceremony, which will be held at the Tate 
Student Center Plaza near the construction site.

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON NEW AQUACULTURE FACILITY:
Work began recently on the new $1.4 million Aquatic Biotechnology and 
Environmental Laboratory at Whitehall Forest off South Milledge 
Avenue. Funded through the Georgia Research Alliance, the lab will be 
among only a handful of such facilities worldwide for testing the 
potential health effects of environmental toxicants.

UGA PRESIDENT NAMED TO KNIGHT COMMISSION:
University of Georgia President Michael F. Adams has been named a 
commissioner of the Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate 
Athletics, a Miami-based foundation whose 1991 report on the state of 
college athletics led to significant changes in the National 
Collegiate Athletic Association. The Knight Commission is an 
independent panel of 28 leaders from the fields of education, 
business and sports.

ON THE MOVE

HAWKINS NAMED ASSOCIATE VP FOR DEVELOPMENT:
Robert S. Hawkins, who has led development staffs and helped conduct 
capital campaigns at two universities, has been named to direct the 
University of Georgia's private fund-raising programs. Hawkins will 
join UGA Nov. 1 as associate vice president for development, a new 
senior-level position in UGA's development office in which he will be 
responsible for managing all development activities.

GLYNN NAMED DIRECTOR OF TEACHER EDUCATION SCHOOL:
Denise Glynn, a professor in elementary education, has been appointed 
director of the School of Teacher Education at UGA's College of 
Education. Glynn has previously served as head of the department of 
elementary education.

HUMPHREYS NAMED DIRECTOR OF SELIG CENTER:
Jeffrey M. Humphreys, who for a decade has been one of the most 
quoted experts on economic trends in Georgia and the Southeast, has 
been promoted to director of the Selig Center for Economic Growth in 
the University of Georgia's Terry College of Business.

UNIVERSITIES BEGIN CREATING PALM-SIZED VERSIONS OF CAMPUS WEB PAGES:
According to an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education the 
University of Georgia is  one of the few colleges and universities in 
the nation offering mobile versions of its Web sites. Users can 
access news and information about UGA on such wireless devices as 
Palm Pilots and Web phones.

EXPERIMENT BACKS NOVEL THEORY OF THE ORIGIN OF LIFE:
University of Georgia scientist Michael W.W. Adams is quoted in a New

UGA EXPERT COMMENTS ON RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN JONBENET RAMSEY MURDER 
INVESTIGATION:
University of Georgia legal expert Ron Carlson is quoted in a number 
of articles appearing in media outlets and Web sites across the 
nation about recent interviews of John and Patsy Ramsey by Atlanta 
and Colorado authorities concerning the murder of their daughter 
JonBenet (pictured left). Those media outlets include WCCO TV, Court 
TV, and FOX News.
