RUSSELL FOUNDATION PLEDGES $3 MILLION TO UGA LIBRARIES: The Richard
B. Russell Foundation has pledged $3 million to the UGA Libraries for
a planned building to house special collections and has agreed to
assist in raising another $3 million toward the total $30 million
needed.

NATIONAL PUBLICATION NAMES TWO UGA SENOIRS AMONG NATIONS TOP 25
ADVERSITING STUDENTS: For the third year in a row, University of
Georgia advertising students have been named to the list of the Top
25 Most Promising Minority Advertising Students.  UGA seniors R.
Bryan S. Elliott and Michelle Humphery, are among the 25 named by the
American Advertising Federation, which sponsors the program in
partnership with Advertising Age.

RESTORED NORTH CAMPUS BUILDING RE-OPENS: A building once used as the
library, then converted to a museum, has been restored and renovated
and now houses the university's senior administrators.  Through
careful research and craftsmanship, workers have restored the
structure to look much as it did when built more than 90 years ago.

FACULTY COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS STIFFER ADMISSIONS CRITERIA: The Faculty
Admissions Committee has recommended to President Michael F. Adams
stiffer criteria for admission of transfer students, plus two new
criteria to be used in making final decisions on remaining applicants
for the fall 2000 freshman class.

UGA PROVIDES TRAINING TO NEW GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS: A two-day training
program coordinated by UGA's Vinson Institute of Government recently
brought more than 400 newly elected municipal officials to the
Georgia Center for Continuing Education to help them prepare for
situations they face on taking office.

LADY BULLDOGS EARN NO. 1 SEED IN NCAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TOURNEY:
The University of Georgia's women's basketball team was selected as
the No. 1 seed in the West Region of the NCAA women's basketball
tournament.  The Lady Bulldogs will host the first two rounds of the
western subregional in Stegeman Coliseum, March 18-20.

$25 MILLION PLAN FOR DYING CORAL REEFS
In a Miami Herald article, UGA ecologist James Porter, who has done
extensive research on coral reefs for the Environmental Protection
Agency, says that a new government plan to rescue the reefs may not
be enough.

SPRING BREAK CHOICES SET UGA STUDENTS APART
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution feature notes that more than 160
student volunteers from the University of Georgia are performing

CONGRESS:  GENE-ALTERED FOODS MAY BE PUT TO THE TEST
Susan Wessler, professor of botany and genetics at UGA, is quoted in
a FOX News story about a Congressional bill which would approve
safety testing on genetically-alter foods to be conducted by the Food
and Drug Administration.
