The Libraries are seeking a flexible and enthusiastic librarian who will cultivate and maintain effective relationships with users and contribute to the growth of the Libraries' instruction and liaison programs. The University and the Libraries have a strong commitment to achieving diversity among faculty and staff. Environment: The University Library system consists of eleven libraries, with independent libraries for health sciences, law, and business. The libraries serve 12,000 undergraduates, 6,000 graduate students and 1,600 teaching faculty. The Library's homepage can be accessed at http://www.lib.virginia.edu. Thomas Jefferson's Academical Village and the historic Grounds provide a gracious backdrop for teaching, learning, and research. The Science and Engineering Libraries are the main source of scientific and technical information for members of the University community and the Central Virginia region. The libraries' collections and services are housed in six locations in the University's science and engineering complex, with a main library and five smaller satellite libraries (Astronomy, Biology/Psychology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics) located adjacent to academic departments. Responsibilities: Reporting to the Coordinator of User Services for the Science and Engineering Libraries, the Librarian will initiate, implement and conduct an aggressive program of outreach to science and engineering students. Works with faculty to integrate information seeking skills into the curriculum, and works with students and student service units to integrate information skills into the academic life of science and engineering students. Designs instructional materials, uses information technology, and delivers instruction in various formats to meet needs of diverse user groups (including undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff, and the general public). Evaluates instruction and liaison activities for program development. Responsible for collection development and liaison activities for designated science and engineering departments. Provides information and research assistance by staffing the Information Desk on a regular schedule. Develops an awareness of current trends in engineering and science. Participates in planning and evaluation of services and policies for the Science and Engineering Libraries. Participates in Library staff development and training activities. Qualifications Master's degree in library science (preferred) or master's degree in a related field required. Excellent communication and presentation skills. Familiarity with learning styles and ability to apply in a Library instruction setting. Ability to use instructional technology effectively in teaching. Interest in developing innovative programs and services with library patrons. Strong service orientation. Demonstrated organizational and analytical skills. Commitment to diversity and ability to work with diverse groups of users and staff. Science or engineering background not required, but ability to learn information sources in the sciences and engineering is critical. Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and development. Salary and Benefits: Salary competitive, depending on qualifications, from $31,000. The University of Virginia offers excellent benefits.
