The UTM Grid has different zones which are based on the meter. They are further divided by Northing and Eastings and there are special tables for interpreting UTM. UTM Grid appears on all US topographic maps along with the Latitude and Longitude. There are several governmental publications that deal exclusively with the UTM Projection and Grid. If you want a brief explanation, check out Maps for America; Cartographic products of the U.S. Geological Survey by Morris Thompson. It is a USGS publication sent to GPO depository libraries. Hope this helps. Helen HelenJane Armstrong, PhD Head, Map & Imagery Library George A.
