Hello All,

I thought that the message below might be of interest to Map
Librarians as well. Please pardon cross postings. Linda Zellmer

The Sharlot Hall Museum Archives in Prescott, Arizona has created what we
think is a unique interface for looking at our historic map collection. It
is a graphical database where researchers who visit our web site can click
the location they are interested in on an index map. That click will bring
up a list of historic maps in our collection that cover that particular
point. This is in response to map researchers who always want to "see all
the maps that cover [this] location."

We have done some significant web searches to find out if there is anything
like this out there for historic maps. We are hoping that archivists, map
librarians, and historians could visit our site www.sharlot.org/archives)
and click on "Graphical Database" to check out how this works. We are
interested in obtaining any feedback that you have. Also, please let us
know if you are aware of other graphical searches that exist for historical
maps.

We have over 4000 maps in our collection. However, we have created MARC
records for only about 200 of these so far (all of which can be accessed
through the graphical database) and only about 30 of those have an image
linked to them.

In addition to the graphical database, the records (with links to images if
done) can also be searched through our local library network. If you would
like to try that, please visit our web site, click on Yavapai Library
Network, and then search "Prescott and Tributary Mining District." There is
a link to the actual image and the complete record (unfortunately, you can
not call up the complete MARC record, but it does exist).

Thank you in advance for any comments or questions.
