This increasingly important division will play a significant role in the continuing development of UBC Library as a major academic research library. The Special Collections Division holds the majority of the UBC Library's rare books, maps and manuscripts. This position will work co-operatively with other Library divisions or branches and direct the acquisition and control of all UBC Library special or rare materials. Currently, the Special Collections Division emphasizes Canadian and local materials. The Special Collections Librarian is responsible for the operation of the Division, for the development of the collections, and for providing effective reference, information and bibliographic services. Evening and weekend work may be required. QUALIFICATIONS An ALA accredited graduate degree in Library Science is required as are a sound knowledge of the antiquarian book trade and a working knowledge of processing and organizational issues. An academic background in Canadian history or literature and a working knowledge of a second language (e.g. French, German, Latin, Chinese, Japanese) are highly desirable. Experience in acquiring and working with Canadian historical and literary materials as well as extensive knowledge of the history of the book are mandatory. Demonstrated experience, over at least five years, in acquiring and managing special collections or rare materials in an academic or research environment is required, as is experience in identifying and developing new areas of collection concentration. Working knowledge and demonstrated ability in addressing the processing, curatorial, and conservation issues associated with special collections are mandatory. Successful supervisory experience and strong interpersonal and communication skills are prerequisites for this position. The Special Collections Librarian works under the general direction of, and is responsible to, the University Librarian. The Librarian works within the policies of the Assistant University Librarian for Collections and Technical Services on purchases of library materials, collections building, cataloguing and processing. The Librarian supervises the work of a small staff. TERMS OF APPOINTMENT: This is a continuing position. If eligible and qualified, the successful applicant may be appointed with a confirmed appointment. Otherwise, there will be an initial three-year probationary appointment. Normally, such an appointment is reviewed by the end of the second year of appointment, and a recommendation is made at that time to grant or not to grant a confirmed appointment. SALARY: Commensurate with experience and academic/professional qualifications.
