The Libraries' innovative Spatial and Numeric Data Services program provides access to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software, training, and data resources, serving faculty, students, and staff across the university. These services are based in the Research and Information Services Department (18 librarians, 6 support staff, and graduate assistants) and involve collaboration with others throughout the Libraries. Collaboration also takes place with Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN) colleagues, faculty-led research groups, University Extension, and digital library colleagues across the country and internationally. The Libraries is a selective Federal documents depository and a member of the InterUniversity Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). Responsibilities Leads the development and management of spatial and numeric data resources and services supporting teaching, research, and extension in all colleges within the university. Maintains a high level of expertise in spatial and numeric data resources and applications, GIS, metadata standards and trends, and user-oriented digital library environments. Monitors and evaluates emerging software applications for data analysis, display, and management, including Web-based tools available to users regardless of time or location. Consults with faculty and students to analyze data needs and to locate and deliver data in appropriate formats. Working closely with reference librarians, Digital Library Initiatives staff, government information specialists, and collection managers, develops policies and procedures for the selection, organization, delivery, updating, and archiving of data collections. Directs the collection and development of metadata to enable effective data retrieval and use. Serves as N.C. State's official representative to the ICPSR. Coordinates the design and delivery of general and discipline-specific instructional sessions for the campus community, and of Web-based tutorials, data documentation, and research resources. Establishes policies and software/data configurations for the Libraries' public GIS workstations. Educates library staff in the use of data resources. Leads the Libraries' GIS Team. Fosters outreach and collaboration with state and local government agencies. Serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams. Librarians at the NCSU Libraries are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. Reports to the Head of Research and Information Services. Qualifications Required: ALA-accredited MLS. Three or more years relevant professional experience. Professional experience with spatial and numeric data resources and familiarity with current issues, technologies, and software applications related to those resources. Demonstrated proficiency with GIS software applications such as ArcView. Demonstrated proficiency with the identification, retrieval, and manipulation of data resources. Familiarity with electronic government resources such as census and statistical data. Experience developing Web-based instructional materials. Strong planning and management skills. Understanding of the educational mission of a research university and the changing learning environment. Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate clearly, knowledgeably, and personably, orally and in writing, with clients and colleagues. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment; ability to work independently. Demonstrated record of professional contributions. Preferred: Three or more years relevant professional experience in an academic or research library. Significant computing experience in a networked, multiplatform environment. Experience with ICPSR data resources and services. Familiarity with social sciences statistical software applications such as SAS and SPSS. Salary and Benefits The Libraries offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience, not less than $45,000 for this position, with required qualifications and not less than $50,000 with preferred qualifications. Librarians have academic status without tenure or rank. Benefits include: 24 days vacation, 12 days sick leave; comprehensive major medical insurance, and state, TIAA/CREF or other retirement options. Additional and optional dental, life, disability, deferred compensation, and legal plans are available. Tuition waiver program for all campuses of The University of North Carolina is available.
