The University of Northern Colorado Libraries is in the process of loading Marcive records for our government documents. We are also examining how we can process our documents more efficiently. We are particularly concerned about the processing of maps. All of our 7.5' maps are filed in the Reference Department by quadrangle name rather than by SuDoc number. Questions: 1). Since FDLP rules stipulate that libraries have 10 days to process items and get them out on the shelves, how do libraries handle assigning SuDoc numbers to maps when SuDoc numbers are not listed on the USGS Shipping Lists and it can take several weeks for GPO or OCLC records to appear? 2). Do you file the maps without SuDoc numbers or with just a portion of the SuDoc number? 3). If you keep the maps in processing until a GPO or OCLC record appears, do you create some kind of a temporary cataloging records that indicates the library owns a copy of the map? 4). If you use LC numbers, do the SuDoc numbers also appear in your catalog records? Thank you in advance. Shirley Soenksen Library Technician II University of Northern Colorado James A.
