Thomas" <[log in to unmask]> Interesting, but I think maybe the Slate writer just needed something to write about and is being too generous with this map. The map doesn't look much different than the usual to me. Isn't it a Miller projection? The equator is still well below the half-way parallel on the map and the northern latitude land masses look pretty big. The big difference is that it's centered differently and is shaded in a monotone instead of having brightly colored political entities, all serving to make the Middle East and Africa look more ominous and the US more puny and defenseless. In this context, it neither "successfully conveys a message of international community" nor offers a remedy from "cartoonish egocentrism" anymore than the US-centered Mercator. --Mark ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Mark Thomas / [log in to unmask] / 919-660-5853, fax:919-684-2855 Economics, Geology, Geography Bibliographer Map and GIS Librarian / Public Documents and Maps Department 025 Perkins Library / Duke University, Durham, NC 27708-0177 > Date: Wed, 9 Oct 2002 16:09:49 -0400 > From: ahudson <[log in to unmask]> > Subject: [MapHist] The Bush Map > > I am not sure this made it to maps-l, was on maphist. > >> An interesting little commentary on the map behind George >> Bush during his speech on Monday night: >> http://slate.com/?id=2072103 --- End Forwarded Message ---
