Yes, we mean electrostatic painting, not spray painting. And yes, we have the Linda Newman article. And input from folks who have undergone this electrotatic work has been wonderful. This will all be helpful in persuading the managers here that we want this done. Many thanks to the most generous folks around. Alice Alice C. Wish you the best, maybe time to schedule that around the world cruise for 5 years! Anyway, we had our shelving painted while I was in S. Carolina. Not quite the same as map cases but the same material type. I was quite surprised. Minimal mess, and I don't recall odor much past the time of actual painting. The process was electromagnetic I believe. (I wouldn't even consider normal spray painting.) They painted the shelves sitting right on the carpet (new building we were moving into) and not so much as a whiff was ever found on the carpet. Somehow the paint (or shelves) is charged to attract to the shelves and goes nowhere else. I believe our vendor was out of Charlotte, but I could check if that becomes important. I would imagine you are talking metal cases so they should react the same way. I suggest you have a potantial vendor visit you and explain the process and calm your apprehension. Will you paint the inside of the drawers or just the outside. I am not sure how long lasting the results are since I left down there within a couple of years of the job, but at the time wear & tear looked similar between the new and the repainted shelves. Hope this helps. Give me a shout if you have any questions...John John D. [yes, your prayers for our recovery are welcome!] One aspect of the work we are considering is to spray paint the map cases, rather than purchase new [inferior] cases or flat files. We are concerned about processes; protection of the collections; off-gassing; costs, etc. We have some 300,000 maps in 3-5 drawer units here in the rooms to be renovated. Another 100,000+ are in storage, and probably will not be painted. Just wonder what others have experienced with spray painting; and long term effects...chipping? vapors? Any input from the map library community is most welcome as we approach Armageddon [and I do not mean Osama, I mean Renovation!] Alice H. Alice C.
