Under the general direction of the Head, Map Collection and Cartographic Information Services, the Map Librarian participates in building user-centered services and collections for a multi-disciplinary clientele. The Map Collection & Cartographic Information Services houses a large collection of more than 260,000 maps, remote sensing imagery including more than 80,000 aerial photographs, atlases and gazetteers, and geospatial data, hosts the Washington Geospatial Data Archive (http://wagda.lib.washington.edu), and serves as a software distribution point for the campus's ESRI site license. Primary users of the collections come from a wide variety of academic areas, including forest resources, geography, earth and space sciences, and urban planning. The Map Collection has been designated by the Washington State Library as the state regional map depository for mapping products of the U.S. Geological Survey and the Government Printing Office. The Map Collection also serves as a U.S. Geological Survey Earth Science Information Center (ESIC), making available free USGS brochures and fact sheets to the public. Provides reference and consultation assistance to users with cartographic materials and geospatial data. Provides course-related instruction and participates in other user education activities. 2. Work closely with primary users in a wide variety of academic areas including forest resources, geography, earth and space sciences, and urban planning. 3. Catalogs maps and remote sensing imagery. Creates and reviews metadata for digital geospatial data. Oversees processing of cartographic materials and creation of local finding aids (remote sensing, aerial photography, etc.). Supervises student assistants. 4. Participates in collection development for cartographic materials (maps, atlases, remote sensing images) and geospatial data. 5. Maintains current awareness of software, hardware, and data capabilities and availability, including Internet resources. 6. Participates in planning, design, and maintenance of the Map Collection web site. 7. May provide reference service in other service units. 8. Serves on Libraries and University committees as appropriate. Maintains a broad understanding of Libraries' operations, policies, priorities and objectives and contributes to these as appropriate. QUALIFICATIONS Required: 1. Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree. 2. Demonstrated knowledge of maps and cartographic resources. 3. Experience providing public service in a library setting. 4. Successful completion of at least one graduate level cataloging course or one year cataloging experience. 5. Knowledge of computing technology, including geospatial data applications. 6. Excellent written and oral communication skills. 7. The ability to interact positively and productively with library colleagues. Preferred: 1. Experience or coursework with geographic information systems (GIS) and digital spatial data. 2. Academic background in earth sciences or geography, or experience in a field that utilizes cartographic materials. 3. Public service experience with cartographic materials in a research library. 4. Experience with staff training and/or user instruction. 5. Collection development experience. 6. Supervisory experience. 7. Working knowledge of AACR2, Library of Congress Rule Interpretations, and Library of Congress Subject Headings, especially as applied to special materials such as cartographic materials. 8. Strong computer skills especially in a networked environment. 9. Web site design, development, and maintenance experience. SALARY: $35,000 minimum. Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and background. BENEFITS: Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of Washington Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF, The Vanguard Group, SAFECO Mutual Funds and/or Fidelity Investments) on a matching basis.
