Previously, as items requiring such headings were received, various geographic information systems had been established in an unsystematic fashion based on the application of the database. The Cataloging Policy and Support Office (CPSO) consulted with the Geography and Map Division and unanimously agreed with the Canadian suggestion to establish a free-floating subdivision "--Geographic information systems" to be used under topics, since these systems have so many actual or potential applications. CPSO will do the necessary work to introduce this new subdivision into the LCSH system. Tentative weekly lists are available for comment over the Internet at the PCC homepage, http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/tentative/twls.html and approved weekly lists at http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/cpso.html#subjects for those who wish to follow the progress of subject proposals through the editorial workflow.
